About

photofrappé: a photographic artspace. why?

‘What’s missing?’ we asked ourselves. What would surprise and delight photographers who essentially want to show their stuff in  a simple, elegant, gallery style. Infinite wall space. No clutter. Pristine background. Total focus on the work.

But maybe, we thought, they’d also like the chance to add text and sound – music, sfx, voice – if they wanted to. To tell a story or create a time-based installation. And what if they want to blog?

‘Whoaa’, we cautioned ourselves, that’s beginning to sound all geeky and complex. Note to selves: keep the options open, but the functionality dead simple.

What else? Maybe a place to chat with like-minds. A café/forum sort of thing. Oh, and a shop front to sell one’s digital and physical work.

It was shaping up nicely, the vision. But it needed dimensionality. So we envisaged a huge, we mean HUGE, warehousy kind of space. Gazillions of square feet/metres/whatever. Lots of rooms.

Over there, a couple of public rooms we’ve set aside for temporary exhibitions of featured photographers. Next door, the photofrappé forum café. And in the west wing, the college.

But the bulk of the rooms are reserved for you, dear photographers. They are your spaces to do with as you will. Hang one image. Hang a thousand. Have a solo show or invite others to share the space. Create a photo essay with voice track. Write a blog. Link to anywhere. It’s your domain. Literally. You@photofrappé.com

So that’s why photofrappé. That was the vision. Guess what. The real thing is just like the vision.

The name photofrappé?  Why not.
